Walking tour, 10-11:30 a.m.
Lunch, 12-1:30 p.m.
Freedom House Museum, 2:15-4:45 p.m.
Join MoCoLMP in Old Town Alexandria, when we take a walking manumission (being released from slavery) tour, and visit the Freedom House Museum. Sign up for one, two or all three of the days activities:
The Freedom's Fight in Alexandria Manumission Tour provides insight into Alexandria's pre-Civil War history of urban slavery. It also highlights runaway enslaved persons such as stepbrothers Oscar and George Ball, free African-Americans like Moses Hepburn, and early abolitionists, such as pharmacist Edward Stabler.
After the walking tour, all are welcome to join us for lunch at Hard Times Cafe on King Street (1/2 mile from the Barrett Library). Hard Times has meal options for carnivores, omnivores, and vegetarians.
Following lunch, we’ll walk 2 blocks to the Freedom House Museum on Duke Street. The Franklin and Armfield Slave Pen—now the Freedom House Museum—was one of the largest slave trading companies in the country and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This museum honors the lives and experiences of the enslaved and free Black people who lived in and were trafficked through Alexandria.
